If you are on Facebook you may have noticed that your Newsfeed, as of late, has been taken over by videos of friends getting a bucket of ice dumped on their heads--all in the name of charity.
One smart cookie of a charity, the ALS Association, as far as Creative Noggin is concerned.
A recent article on AdWeek ponders claims that the wave of people drenching themselves in frigid water might just be "clicktivism" which "ultimately delivers more faux-activist pride to the participants than funds to the ALS researchers."
But the number of donations collected so far this year are pointing to far more success than just "clicktivism," that's for sure.
As of August 20, 2014, the ALS Association has raised 31.5 million dollars. That's 29.6 million dollars more than the 1.9 million they had raised at this same time in 2013.
Sorry for that corny pun, but THAT is no drop in the proverbial bucket, to say the least.
The most amazing thing to watch is the incremental viral nature of the campaign, which plays on human pride and activism with a fairly simple and easy-to-do challenge. Either donate $100 to ALS within 24 hours or show a video of yourself dumping ice on your head and challenging your own friends.
How incremental? Well in one 24-hour period, from Tues, August 19th until Wed, August 20th, the #icebucketchallenge raised $8.6 million.
